Role and Responsibilities

Objective: Our desire in leading worship is to give God the glory and honor due Him, and to equip the church to worship the Lord in Spirit and in Truth. (John 4:24).  The Minister of Music should be able to lead & support the congregation during worship with appropriate musical selection and accompany the church choir for special events. MOBC desires to build a Music Ministry which provides a positive musical development for choir members of all ages. An integral part of the music ministry strategy includes teaching/coaching of our ministry members to elevate their spiritual understanding through music. This person should be a Christian who desires to use his or her gifts in ministry. He or she should exhibit technical proficiency in playing hymns and contemporary Christian music, playing from lead sheets, accompanying anthems, following direction, sight reading, and solo performance. This person should relate well to all ages and work well as a team member.  This employee must be supportive of church staff and policy and should be willing and able to communicate that support.

The Minister of Music shall:

Serve the evolving spiritual needs of MOBC.

  • Work with the Pastor to create a well- planned and prayerful worship services

  • Prepare and play for all choir and worship team rehearsals.

  • Serve as pianist/organist at practices and worship

  • Be available for weekly scheduled practices, as well as Sunday Worship Service.

  • Work effectively as a team-player supporting and encouraging other members of the church body by exhibiting outstanding people skills.

  • Prepare MOBC Choirs as they participate in scheduled worship/fellowship services, and concerts, etc.

  • Play for MOBC choirs during ministry engagements to include special events outside of schedule practices and services

  • Prepare and perform all music selections in the Sunday service including hymns, contemporary worship music, and choir accompaniment.

  • Prepare and play special music as needed, including offertory and communion music unless other ministries have been requested to perform certain selections.

  • Accompany special events on the church calendar, which might include an Easter cantata, a Christmas music program, or other special services.

  • Notify the Pastor or designee of any absences to allow a suitable substitute to be obtained

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities

Strong commitment to Jesus Christ demonstrates a passion for Christ and his Kingdom through personal spiritual discipline and public ministry. Seek to grow in that relationship with Christ through personal spiritual discipline, education, accountability, and service to his Kingdom.

 

  1. Musically trained: understands music from a variety of genres and generations, with particular emphasis on traditional and contemporary music (“praise and worship,” contemporary arrangements of traditional hymns)

  2. Experience: at least 3 years of leadership in public worship, with a commitment of seeking to grow in that area, perhaps through further training

  3. Musical skills: ability to lead worship, Proficient in organ, piano, and demonstrate the ability to read chord charts.

  4. Communication: Good communication skills, both verbal and written.

  5. Ownership: Be responsible for the appropriateness and readiness of all music rendered during church services.

  6. Time management: ability to maximize time in rehearsals and worship services that create an atmosphere of worship and skilled vocalist

  7. Presentation: have the propensity to implement uniformity and structure that will cause spiritual growth; Stay abreast of current music methods and materials (e.g., traditional & contemporary gospel, hymns, and praise & worship).
